A temperature slightly below room temperature about 65 degrees F or 18 degrees C is perfect, so the pantry or the cellar is the way to go. Storing champagne in a kitchen cabinet for short-term works too, just remember it should stay away from the oven. If you have a bottle of vintage champagne that you want to store for a prolonged period, lay it on its side. Transfer the champagne to the fridge a few hours before opening the bottle, as this kind of alcohol is best served chilled.

Once you open the bottle, you should store the leftovers in the fridge. Before we can discuss shelf life, we need to discuss two kinds of champagne available on the market. Champagnes can be divided into vintage and non-vintage ones. Vintage champagnes are considered higher quality, are usually aged longer, and last longer in good quality. And they cost much more, as you might imagine. Unopened sparkling wine, like other types of wine, lasts at least a few years after bottling.

As I already mentioned, vintage champagne retains its quality and bubbles much better than its non-vintage counterpart. Keep in mind, though, if there is enough pressure from the bubbles, the stopper may become dislodged while it is stored, causing the the champagne to go flat. With a stopper like this, the wine will start to lose some of its bubbles and freshness fairly quickly. However, it will still be good enough to make mimosas or other mixed drinks for a day or two!

Some people who like less aggressive bubbles may actually prefer champagne or sparkling wine on the second day. After three days, most sparkling wines become flat not sparkling. To minimize the oxygen coming into contact with the leftover champagne in the bottle, there are a few options to seal the bottle that are a little better than a simple bottle stopper.

For both the Kloveo and the Repour, bottles should stay standing up in the refrigerator once the enclosure has been placed on the bottle opening. Regardless of the enclosure, the reason we recommend keeping an opened champagne or sparkling wine in the refrigerator is to slow down the loss of carbon dioxide.

Carbon dioxide is more soluble in wine and any other beverage when temperatures are lower. Old champagne or any sparkling wine for that matter will not make you sick unless of course, you overindulge. We recommend drinking any remnant champagne within 24 hours.

It is generally not a good idea to place sparkling wines in the freezer simply for the reason that one can forget the wine in the freezer. Upon opening the freezer door the next day, you can be greeted with a wine popsicle - and typically the cork has been compromised or pushed out of the bottle.

While one can thaw and drink most still wines , sparkling wines often lose some of their bubbles after being frozen. When purchasing any sparkling wine or non-vintage champagne, a good rule of thumb is that it is still fresh and effervescent a few years after bottling. But keep the ice bucket topped up just to be on the safe side. All of the bottle markings should remain clearly visible at all times, partly out of respect for the producer but also to show off the bottle in all its finery and let guests see the brand they are drinking.

If you must use a napkin, tuck it under the bottle so as to leave the name of the marque in full view. Place the Champagne in the part of the refrigerator that will give you the level of coldness you want, preferably laying the bottle on its side to avoid differences in temperature between the top and the bottom.

Remember too that the bottle will only stay chilled for as long as it remains in the fridge. After that it will start to warm up — no such problem with an ice bucket.

Alternatively, for a picnic say, a cooler bag can be extremely useful. Champagne will keep in the fridge for several weeks so you can always have some handy, chilled to just the right temperature.
