Romans What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one. Paul cites the OT to charge all with sin, both Jews and Gentiles, preparing the way for the claim that right standing with God is available only for those who trust in the atoning death of Christ.

Even though God has promised to fulfill his saving promises to the Jewish people vv. Greeks here refers to the entire Gentile world in contrast to the Jews. Paul focuses on the sinfulness of every human being, citing Ps.

When Paul says none is righteous, no one seeks for God, and no one does good, he means that no human being on his own seeks for God or does any good that merits salvation. Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.

You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him.

Lawlessness Gk. Even Christians sin ; , so it may seem like a trivial matter. Jesus appeared in order to take away sins, not only so that sin might be forgiven but also so that it might cease to exercise its tyrannical bondage. True followers of Christ do not recklessly and habitually violate what their anointing , 27 has planted within them.

Those who do habitually sin have neither seen him nor known him. They are not genuine Christians. Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.

But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. These verses also show that Adam had a leadership role with respect to the human race that Eve did not have, for even though Eve sinned by eating the forbidden fruit before Adam did so Gen.

Sin came into the world through one man, namely, Adam Rom. Another interpretation is that all sinned personally because they were born into the world spiritually dead. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

This verse is one of the most important in all of Scripture for understanding the meaning of the atonement and justification. Here we see that the one who knew no sin is Jesus Christ 2 Cor. See further notes on Rom. What constitutes such blasphemy is not so clear, but generally the idea is that rejecting God and God's good news for salvation is the most radical and thorough rejection a person can make, and thus it separates the blasphemer most profoundly from the community of faith.

This is not so much a punishment for the sinner as it is a fact about the sinner's willful rejection of God's grace. If I were to translate this sentiment about unforgivable sin into my own life list, I'd probably include the following sins as fundamental, although the concept of unforgivability from a forgiving God is not sensible to me and one that I cannot accept into my own faith life.

I believe that God can forgive all sins provided the sinner is truly contrite and has repented for his or her offenses. Here's my list of unforgivable sins:. These are more than unforgivable to me; they are incomprehensible. They violate the most basic dignity of the human person and, as such, deny God in our broken world. Tomorrow may not be better than today, but when you stop hoping that tomorrow will be better than today, you're lost.

The beginning of a prayer life is understanding that we've been given more than we deserve and that we really need to thank God for the extra blessings. Every day we awaken to life, our blessings are greater than our burdens.

Spending all your time thinking about what God has taken from you blinds you to the overwhelming abundance of what God has given to you.

Being made in the image of God is actually two blessings. The first blessing is being made in God's image. The second blessing is knowing that you're made in God's image. If you don't know this, you must learn it before you start believing the worst things hateful people say about you.

Is there a purpose to life? What happens after I die?
