Colm O'Rourke. OVER the last few weeks there have been a few players at post-match interviews trotting out the line about a lack of hunger in the camp, and how in some cases they seem almost relieved at being out of the championship. Suddenly they have time for passions like a day at the beach, or holidays with endless hours in the galleries and museums of Europe. N ow, I know well there are times when you get cheesed off with the continuous routine of training and matches, but since no team has managed to retain the All-Ireland in the '90s it's surprising to hear such comments.

By nature a good footballer is a hungry animal; a great footballer never loses that greed for winning no matter what the accumulation of honours. If there is even a small sense of relief at losing then you've no business training or playing at this level.

It would be more useful to stay at home, walk the dog, or go to the local hall and play bingo. Top class football is played best by those with an insatiable hunger and ambition for success.

This thought struck me forcefully last Sunday watching Clare and Galway hurlers. If ever a team had an excuse to lie down and accept defeat, after years of triumph mixed with disasters, it was Clare. Yet their pride is such that they just won't roll over and die.

At times they faced not just defeat, but humiliating defeat, from a very skilful Galway side. But the opera ain't over till the fat lady sings, and Clare are deaf to that class of a tune. If more football sides played with the sort of passion shown by both counties last week then we'd have a far better football championship.

Today in Croke Park will illustrate what is required. It will be big on passion, skill and bravery, and any other quality that makes players great. In this feverish atmosphere too there will be an even more obvious gap between those who lead, those who follow, and the remaining third who don't know what's going on.
